Eric San has everything a successful turntablist needs: lightning-quick fingers, a bottomless crate of vinyl, and a fuzzy Koala costume. Part DJ, part musician, part visual artist, and part stand-up comedian, the Montreal-based entertainer better known as Kid Koala is among Canada’s best live acts (again, fuzzy Koala costume). We caught up with Eric while he was touring his etched graphic novel as well as the ambitious Space Cadet — an interactive floor-seated variety show/concert with space pods and wireless headphones — and traced his descent into the madness of turntablism.
